“Indeed, I am near…”
Allah, the Exalted, says:
﴾And when My servants ask you, [O Muḥammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided﴿ [Al-Baqarah: 186].
A weak creature may travel billions of light-years to reach another being like himself, yet Allah—despite His greatness and the majesty of His power—is nearer to us than all those vast distances within the limits of our perception and ignorance. However far we imagine the distance, we will never reach it—yet Allah is nearer. Truly sensing His nearness brings one to tears.
Nearness in itself is consolation—what a consolation it is. The tears of one who has found someone who listens. At times, all one needs is someone who truly hears what stirs within and weighs upon the heart. One weeps the tears of one who has found intimacy; for we are created to seek closeness—and what a blessed closeness this is. One weeps as one who has found a healer for a deep illness, one who soothes, reassures, and listens to what the tongue cannot express but the eyes overflow with.
Sometimes, we simply need nearness…
Nearness in a time when we have scattered like stars in a dark night. To the observer, we appear to shine, yet only our positions remain—each of us drifting alone in the orbit of our worries and concerns. We are here, yet not truly here—together, yet far from one another. But Allah is near.
Then comes the greatest consolation a servant can know:
﴾I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me﴿ [Al-Baqarah: 186].
A distance crossed—not by means—but through submission to His commands and steadfastness in faith. You do not need intermediaries to reach Him, nor any means between you and Him. You only need complete certainty in His nearness, and firm faith in His divinity, His lordship, His names and attributes—faith that resides in the heart, is affirmed by the tongue, and is manifested through actions.
Here, you sense the One who hears your quiet call that never passed beyond the walls of your room, the One who knows what trembles within your heart before you even speak it… Nearness here is fear and hope, awe and reassurance, reverence and consolation.
Nearness here teaches you proper conduct in the presence of Allah—Glorified, Exalted, and Most High in a manner befitting His majesty and supreme authority. His nearness teaches you humility before Him, to lay yourself before Him, and to converse with Him intimately.
