Devotion of the Heart to Allah Alone

Faith is not a single, fixed state that, once attained, guarantees a person immunity from decline or collapse. Rather, it increases and decreases; it grows stronger in certain circumstances and may weaken in others. It is within these fluctuations that the true difference lies in how each of us responds to this reality. Here, the sincerity of a believer becomes evident—either through striving against the self, seeking reform and purification, or through complacency and neglect of wounds that continue to bleed.

Among the manifestations of this reality is when a person notices in their heart an attachment to someone, however slight. Such an attachment causes that person to occupy recurring corners of the mind throughout the day, leading one to devote part of their energy to gaining their affection and approval, while becoming distracted from what is more beneficial and worthy of attention.

In such attachment lie misery, distress, constriction of the heart, and the loss of inner tranquility. It is a misplacement of priorities, where what should belong to Allah alone is directed toward another—whether hope, the desire to please, fear, seeking help, reliance, love, or striving. This diminishes the perfection of tawḥīd (Monotheism) and becomes a cause of abandonment and disappointment.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever becomes attached to something will be left to it.”
Narrated by Ahmad.

Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, stated that among the greatest corrupters of the heart is its attachment to anything besides Allah, the Blessed and Exalted. He then said:
“This is the most destructive of all things to the heart. Nothing is more harmful to it, nor more effective in cutting it off from its welfare and happiness. When a person becomes attached to other than Allah, Allah leaves him to that which he has attached himself, and he is forsaken through the very thing upon which he depends. He is deprived of attaining what he seeks from Allah because of his attachment to others and his turning toward them. Thus, he neither gains his share from Allah nor reaches what he hoped to obtain from the one to whom he became attached.”

Whoever senses such an attachment within the recesses of their heart should remember that the one from whom they seek fulfillment is merely a weak and needy creature like themselves—unable to bring benefit or harm independently. Then let them reflect on what it would mean if the One whose pleasure and love they sought were the Creator of the earth and all who dwell upon it; the Originator of the heavens and all they contain; the One free from every imperfection and possessed of absolute perfection; the One whom the seven heavens, the earth, and all within them glorify; the One who, when He wills a thing, only says to it, “Be,” and it is; the One whose knowledge encompasses all things, from whom nothing is hidden and not even the smallest particle escapes His awareness.

This is, by Allah’s permission, a practical and beneficial way to free the heart from attachment to created beings: whenever one senses the heart inclining toward someone, they should redirect their focus and concern toward the Lord of that person. They should nurture within themselves a longing to attain His love, to draw near to Him, and to enjoy His companionship and nearness. In doing so, they become content with directing all devotion to Allah alone, independent of all else, thereby realizing complete and sincere servitude to Him.

And sufficient is Allah as a Protector. Sufficient is Allah as a Helper. Sufficient is Allah as a Companion, a Refuge, and the One in whom all hope is placed.

O Allah, we ask You for Your love, intimacy with You, hearts devoted to You alone, longing to meet You, eagerness to turn to You, and detachment from all that distracts us from You.
