The Prophet ﷺ: A Role Model for All Mankind

The Prophet ﷺ as the Best Example

Allah Almighty says:

“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.”
[Al-Ahzab: 21]

Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

“This noble verse is a great foundational principle in emulating the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in his sayings, actions, and states.”

Since Allah sent him as a mercy to the worlds and a guide to humanity, he became the supreme model and the perfect example for those who hope for Allah and the Last Day and who seek no corruption or arrogance upon the earth.

The Meaning of “Role Model”

The Arabic term qudwah means one who is emulated. It is said: “So-and-so is a qudwah,” meaning people follow his example and imitate his path.

Today, the Muslim’s need to emulate the Prophet ﷺ is greater than ever, especially amid the many false claims and the temptations of doubts and desires by which the enemies of Allah seek to divert people from His path.

We will, therefore, speak about him as a leader, judge, ruler, reformer, teacher, educator, husband, father, manager, and commander, drawing upon authentic traditions.
He is the perfect example every believer should follow; everything he did or said serves as a model to emulate.

“So, Follow Their Guidance”

Allah commanded His Prophet to follow the guidance of the previous messengers:

“They are those whom Allah has guided, so follow their guidance.”
[Al-An‘am: 90]

Ibn Kathir explained:

“That is, imitate and follow them. If this is a command to the Prophet ﷺ, then his followers are even more obliged to follow what he was commanded.”

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said:

“In the stories of the prophets there are lessons for the believers. They too will be tested, sometimes more severely, and must not despair. They should know that those better than them were tried before them, and the end was always good. This strengthens the faith of the believers and renews repentance among the sinners.”

Examples of What We Are Commanded to Emulate

1. Strength in Worship and Obedience

The prophets were the strongest of people in worship and submission to Allah.
Allah says:

“And remember Our servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—those of strength and vision.”
[Sad: 45]

‘Ata’ al-Khurasani said:

“They were strong in worship and insightful in understanding Allah’s commands.”

Qatadah said:

“They were granted strength in worship and insight in religion.”

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, though his past and future sins were forgiven, was the most devoted in worship. Allah told him:

“And during the night prostrate to Him and glorify Him long at night.”[Al-Insan: 26]
“And worship Him and be steadfast in His worship.”[Maryam: 65]
“And from part of the night, pray with it as additional worship for you; it may be that your Lord will raise you to a praised station.”[Al-Isra’: 79]

2. Their Abundance of Supplication and Humility

They were constantly remembering Allah, humbly invoking Him and seeking His help.
About Prophet Ayyub (Job), Allah says:

“And [mention] Job when he called to his Lord, ‘Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.’ So We responded to him…”[Al-Anbiya: 83–84]

Similarly, about Yunus (Jonah) and Zakariyya (Zechariah), Allah tells us of their heartfelt pleas and His merciful response.
They “used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear, and they were humbly submissive to Us.” — [Al-Anbiya: 90]

The Prophet ﷺ was likewise persistent in supplication. On the day of Badr, he prayed intensely:

“O Allah, fulfill Your promise to me. O Allah, grant me what You promised. O Allah, if this small group is destroyed, You will not be worshiped on earth.”
He continued praying until his cloak fell from his shoulders, and Abu Bakr covered him and said:
“O Messenger of Allah, that is enough! Allah will surely fulfill His promise to you.”

3. Their Humility and Tears in Remembering Allah

Allah praised the prophets, saying:

“When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration, weeping.”[Maryam: 58]

The Prophet ﷺ was the most God-fearing of all. He said:

“By Allah, I am the most fearing of Allah among you and the most mindful of Him.”
And he would often say:
“O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.”

4. Their Profound Knowledge of Allah

The prophets possessed the deepest knowledge of Allah, which gave them the strongest faith and reverence. Ibn al-Qayyim wrote:

“True happiness and success in both worlds can only be attained through the guidance of the messengers… Their way is the standard by which all beliefs and deeds are measured.”

Why We Must Follow the Prophet ﷺ

  1. His life is the most complete of all lives.
Allah chose him, prepared him, and made his life a light for humanity.
  2. Because Allah commanded it.

“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example…”[Al-Ahzab: 21]

  3. Because Allah protected him from error.
His actions were divinely guided; even if he erred, Allah corrected him.
  4. Because his life is full of lessons and wisdom.
Every stage of his mission—faith, patience, leadership, family, and struggle—offers guidance.
  5. Because following him is the key to victory and success.
No nation can prosper without imitating his example.
  6. Because he is a role model in every aspect of life.
As a man, husband, father, leader, friend, and worshiper, his example is unmatched.

Knowing His Biography Is Essential to Following Him

One cannot truly emulate him without knowing his life, manners, and conduct with all kinds of people.
Understanding his Seerah (biography) and Sunnah is therefore a duty for every believer who seeks to walk in his light.
