Reflections on Surah Al-Kahf (Khutbah)

First Sermon
All praise is due to Allah. We praise Him, seek His help, and ask for His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evils within ourselves and from our wrong deeds. Whomever Allah guides, none can mislead; and whomever He allows to go astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partners, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.
﴿ O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except in a state of Islam. ﴾ [3:102]
﴿ O mankind! Fear your Lord, Who created you from a single soul, and created from it its mate, and spread from the two many men and women. And fear Allah, through Whom you ask one another, and (respect) the ties of kinship. Indeed, Allah is Ever-Watchful over you. ﴾ [4:1]
﴿ O you who believe! Fear Allah and speak words of truth. He will rectify your deeds and forgive your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has indeed achieved a great success. ﴾ [33:70–71]
Dear believers:
If we look at the lives of individuals, societies, and nations, we find that they have built refuges — like underground caves — to protect themselves from trials, wars and turmoil. And as our lives today are surrounded by many trials, wars, worries, and anxieties, we too are in need of a “cave” of protection.
For this reason, our religion commands us every Friday to recite Surah Al-Kahf, for it is a lifeline. It addresses the causes of many spiritual, moral, and worldly imbalances. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on Friday will have a light between this Friday and the next.”
He ﷺ also said:
“Whoever memorizes the first ten verses of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the trial of the Dajjal.”
[Muslim]
And:
“Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on Friday will have a light between him and the Ancient House.”
The “light” may be spiritual guidance in this world or a visible light on the Day of Judgment.
The Major Trials Mentioned in Surah Al-Kahf
Surah Al-Kahf addresses the greatest trials faced by humankind:
- The trial of faith
- The trial of wealth
- The trial of knowledge
- The trial of power and authority
1 — The Trial of Faith: The People of the Cave
The youths of the cave were sons of nobility and wealth, but they saw their people deviate into idol worship and worldly attachment. They tried to reform, but were persecuted. Fearing for their faith — their greatest possession — they left everything and sought refuge in a dark, narrow cave.
Allah honored them for their sacrifice:
﴾ [Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, "Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance." So We cast [a cover of sleep] over their ears within the cave for a number of years.﴿ [Al-Kahf: 10:11]
And:
﴾ [The youths said to one another], "And when you have withdrawn from them and that which they worship other than Allah, retreat to the cave. Your Lord will spread out for you of His mercy and will prepare for you from your affair facility."﴿ [ِAl-Kahf: 16].
A small portion of Allah’s mercy can turn a cave, a prison, or a cell into a garden of Paradise — for hearts filled with faith.
2 — The Trial of Wealth: The Owner of the Two Gardens
Allah narrates the story of a man whose gardens flourished with beauty, rivers, and fruit. But instead of gratitude, he became arrogant:
﴾And he had fruit, so he said to his companion while he was conversing with him, "I am greater than you in wealth and mightier in [numbers of] men."﴿ [Al-Kahf: 34]
Wealth deluded him into denying the Hereafter. Then suddenly:
﴾And his fruits were encompassed [by ruin], so he began to turn his hands about [in dismay] over what he had spent on it, while it had collapsed upon its trellises, and said, "Oh, I wish I had not associated with my Lord anyone." And there was for him no company to aid him other than Allah, nor could he defend himself.﴿ [Al-Kahf: 42–43]
The lesson:
Wealth without faith leads to ruin, arrogance, and spiritual blindness.
3 — The Trial of Knowledge: Musa and Al-Khidr
When Prophet Musa was asked if anyone on earth was more knowledgeable than him, he replied “No”, believing he spoke factually. Allah, however, taught him humility.
Allah informed him about a servant more knowledgeable — Al-Khidr.
Through their journey, Musa witnessed actions he could not initially understand:
- The damaged ship — a hidden protection.
- The killed boy — a mercy for believing parents.
- The rebuilt wall — preservation of a treasure for orphans.
Al-Khidr said:
﴾And I did it not of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience."﴿ [Al-Kahf: 82]
I say these words, and I ask Allah’s forgiveness for myself and for you. Seek His forgiveness — He is the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
4 — Dhul-Qarnayn
The final story mentioned in this surah is that of Dhul-Qarnayn, a righteous servant whom Allah endowed with means, strength, and abundant blessings. He taught us how to deal with people, how to make proper use of the favors Allah grants, how justice forms the foundation of authority and governance, and how he traveled across the lands — east and west. He built a mighty barrier using iron blocks and pouring molten copper over them, mobilizing the abilities of the people for construction and righteous work on earth.
Allah the Exalted says:
﴾He said: “What my Lord has empowered me with is better. Help me with strength, and I will build a barrier between you and them. Bring me blocks of iron.” Then, when he had leveled them between the two mountains, he said, “Blow!” And when he had made it like fire, he said, “Bring me molten copper to pour over it.” So they were unable to scale it, nor were they able to pierce it.﴿ [Al-Kahf: 95–97]
The surah concludes with a magnificent glad tidings: Allah’s honoring of the believers and the lofty ranks prepared for them in Paradise, along with eternal bliss that never fades — as a reward for their righteousness, an honor for their efforts, and a grace from Allah. Whoever desires the highest level of Paradise (Al-Firdaws) and seeks Allah’s pleasure must hold fast to sincerity and righteous deeds.
There are many profound lessons in Surah Al-Kahf that time does not permit us to detail. Therefore, we must reflect upon its meanings, recite it especially on Fridays, and memorize it — at least the first ten verses or the last ten — due to the virtues mentioned regarding them.
Now send peace and blessings upon the bearer of glad tidings, the warner, the shining lamp, as Allah, the All-Knowing, has commanded:
﴿ Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and greetings of peace. ﴾ [Al-Ahzab: 56]
O Allah, strengthen Islam and the Muslims, and humiliate Your enemies, the enemies of the religion.
O Allah, grant safety in our lands, rectify our affairs, and bring us back to Your religion in a beautiful return.
O Allah, forgive the believing men and women, unite their hearts, and gather them upon the truth.
O Lord, forgive us and our parents, and have mercy on them as they raised us when we were young.
O Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us — and our parents — from the torment of the grave and the Fire.
Servants of Allah:
﴿ Indeed, Allah commands justice, excellence, and giving to relatives, and forbids obscenity, wrongdoing, and oppression. He admonishes you so that you may take heed. ﴾ [An-Nahl: 90]
Remember Allah, and He will remember you. Be grateful for His blessings, and He will increase you.
﴿ And the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows what you do. ﴾ [Al-‘Ankabut: 45]
